Umbrella Factory Located nine kilometers east of Chiang Mai, Bo Sang is known throughout Thailand as the ‘Umbrella Village’. Bo Sang Umbrella Villagers were engaged into umbrella making for more than two centuries. The village has made umbrellas for generations and the art has been handed down through a small number of families that live here. Originally, Borsang was once a typical rural village where people relied on seasonal agricultural work. With the introduction of umbrella manufacturing using Saa paper (a paper made from bark of the mulberry tree) combined with dedication and inherent arts & crafts skills, the village has since been associated with umbrella manufacture and the Borsang umbrella is now one of the best selling souvenirs of Northern Thailand.

Borsang paper-made umbrellas feature assorted designs and colors. Besides Saa paper, the umbrellas are also made with silk and cotton and are adorned by hand-painted northern Thailand images such as scenery, flowers and birds. To widen export markets internationally, they are produced in a variety of sizes ranging from giant parasol for sun shade to the tiny umbrellas used for cocktail drink adornment.

Borsang Handicrafts Center is one of the most well-known handicrafts hubs in Thailand and accessible to visitors throughout the year for a variety of handicraft industry tours and of course shopping. There are few Chiang Mai events that can compare to the vibrant and festive spirit of the village during this three-day festival, where you can take pleasure in the atmosphere and bask in the charm of northern Lanna Thai Hospitality.

Visitors to Borsang will see literally hundreds of designs and sizes of umbrellas ranging from the miniature to the gigantic. Also, visitors can closely watch the umbrellas being made, then choose one from the variety of beautiful and colorful designs as your souvinir.

The best time to visit the village is during the third week of January. This is the time when Bo Sang Umbrella Village holds its annual Bo Sang Umbrella Festival. During the annual event, Bo Sang Umbrella Village will be brightly decorated. The highlights every year are to walk down the streets that are completely illuminated by lanterns, looking into each wooden house,to see hundreds of umbrellas hung from the rafters and roof beams. Craft shops and stores line on both sides of the street to display their items including the colorful umbrellas and traditional lanterns. Pickup trucks are also covered with brightly colored parasols and fans, and the locals dress up in their finest traditional outfits to join in the parade. You can also engage in a round of healthy bargaining with the shop owners.
